Taking care of a fresh Piercing is crucial and can be very annoying, But without proper after care a piercing can lead very bad results such as migration(when a piercing moves away from the desired location and settles into a different location), rejection( the body rejects a piercing and starts pushing it out) , Infection ( the area pierced, gets swollen, red, flaky, pus comes put, it had smelly secretions, area is in constant pain) although a lot of the symptoms associated with infection seem like the normal healing process of a piercing, it is not. One would be able to tell the difference between the minute inconvenience of healing to an infection. In this short article I will be showing you the easy and crucial steps of taking care of a fresh piercing with no complications.

Taking care of the new piercing

First here are some things to avoid at all cost.

  • avoid smoking tabacco cigarettes while your piercing is healing. why? because tabacco cigarettes narrows your blood vessels thus creating irregular blood flow which does not promote healthy healing)
  • avoid playing around with your jewelry, No if you don't twirl it will get stuck that is just a myth! that causes more harm than help, including fluid retention.
  • Tanning, it damages cells, and can cause scar tissue.
  • alcohol, hydrogen peroxide and store bought piercing aftercare! They contain harsh corrosive chemicals that damage your skin.
  • changing the jewelry, during the healing process, It causes infection and irritation, and you fresh piercing cant stand new heavy and porous jewelry while healing.
  • stress no, sleep and a bad diet can contribute to slower healing.
  • Don't touch that piercing without washing and or your hands!

Now that we got over what to avoid lets go on to proper after care.

While there are a plethora of after care methods the one most recommended is the sea salt method. Warm water and sea salt it cleanses the area without using those harsh and unnatural chemicals. It is very beneficial in the view of the fact that, It cleanses the skin, it rejuvenates the skin, it removes those nasty crusties from your piercing site, stimulates blood flow and it overall naturally helps heal the skin.

What you will need.

  • sea salt, Not table salt, not epsom salt, not bath salts. absolutely no salts with Iodine or spices in it. Just pure and simple sea salt, You can get this at your local grocery store. (fine grain sea salt is your best bet, although there is some brands of sea salt that come with a grinder so you can grind the sea salt at your preferred size)
  • water, preferably filtered or bottled water, try to avoid tap water. If you have to use tap water boil it then wait for it too cool, so bacteria is killed.
  • a dixie cup, a cup, cotton swabs or cotton balls, depending on the area pierced and the piercing it self.
  • clean washed hands.
The saline solution.
For one cup there should be 1/2 teaspoon. So it does not irritate your skin, and it still does the job.The solution should taste like your tears, salty but not too salty.
Instructions
  1. Make sea salt mixture
  2. soak piercing in the sea salt/water mixture
  • for navel piercing or any surface abdominal piercing use a small cup such as a dixie cup and place over piercing, You should do so by apply the cup when standing up or sitting otherwise you will spill all over yourself. It will create a suction, Leave for ten minutes. Then pat dry with a clean sterile napkin. Don't use a towel it harbors bacteria.
  • for smaller piercing such as eyebrow and monroe you want to soak a clean unused cotton-ball in the sea salt mix then place on your piercing for ten minutes. For nose use a cotton swab a.k.a q-tip.
  • for Ear piercing just use a cup and tilt your head so you are dipping the pierce earlobe in the solution and continue to do so for 10 minutes. CAUTION: do not submerge your ear canal in the solution or allow any of the solution to enter your ear, It isnt deadly but its not good to have water inside your ear. For piercings near the ear canal use a cotton swab.
repeat these steps 3-5 times a day.
Remember, Not to change jewelry until the piercing is healed, Don't use harsh chemicals( gentle soap is ok, when showering), try to avoid smoking, avoid touching it or causing trauma, dont touch! and if you need to touch have clean hands, dont tan, and relax. Treat your new piercing with care and relaxation. Don't stress.
